BEYOND THE HIPSTER HAIRBAND AND THE RED LIPSTICK: FASHION BLOGGER FEATURING NORBYAH NOLASCO

Do you ever rummage through your parent’s closet and find pieces from the 60’s and 70’s that you instantly snap up? One of my best finds are these burgundy tinted cat eye sunnies that my mom wore in her 30’s and my dad’s chunky cozy hand-knit Icelandic sweater from the 60’s.  Whether it be sentimental, environmental, or fashion-central, we see more and more people wearing vintage, semi-vintage (upcycled fashion), or are vintage-inspired.

We recently had the pleasure to sit down with Norbyah Nolasco, the founder and voice behind I’m a Norbyah, a Hong Kong based fashion and lifestyle blog where she shares her love for vintage, her passion for promoting sustainable living, and also how she keeps her cool as a mother, teacher, wife, fashion blogger, and Etsy addict.  As a big fan of her blog, and a vintage rookie, I wanted to find out more about this girl behind the hipster hairband and the red lipstick.

Why the love for vintage?

Norbyah grew up in Malaysia in a community where wearing hand-me-downs were never an issue.  She loves the fact that vintage is one of a kind, and that there is a special story behind each piece. Another reason she mentions, is that the quality of vintage garments are much better than most of the pieces we find in stores these days.  “Otherwise, it would have not lasted all these decades!” she points out. And lastly, one of the biggest reason for her love for vintage stems from the “green” side of Norbyah.  Norbyah has always been a person with an environmental conscience – she is actively involved in her school’s Green committee, and has started a “Feel Good Fashion” series on her blog in which she highlights designers with an eco-conscious component to their mission. Wearing vintage, most importantly, allows her to “feel good” about each piece she wears, knowing that she is not adding more burden to the environment.

Pet peeves?

I asked Norbyah what her hubby and kids would say as her pet peeve.  After a slight *sigh*, she tells me that it definitely would be that she is nit-picky around the house.  Norbyah doesn’t like it when things are everywhere, and often finds herself needing to politely (and she stresses ‘politely’) ask her kids and hubby to clean up after themselves.  However, she notes, and is embarrassed to admit, that she has somewhat of a double standard because there are a few places around the house where you’ll find piles of vintage clothing stacked up, but would not bother her at all!

We then asked Norbyah to choose a number between 1 to 10.  The number 4 it was! Below are some fun facts about Norbyah where she had to name

Great post! Vintage closet finds are simply the best! One person's trash may be another's treasure, we can certainly attest to that :)
